In a master class an ensemble performs a single movement or piece which they have prepared and a master-teacher will give them advice on how to play it, often including anecdotes about the composer, demonstrations of how to play certain passages, and admonitions of common technical errors. The group plays the piece again, in light of the master’s comments. Master classes for tend to focus on the finer details of a piece and overall shape. Master classes are held in front of all the young artists and an audience. The value of the master class is that the audience as well as the ensemble benefit from the master’s comments on each piece. The ensemble receives musical and technical advice on their piece and the audience learns how to critically listen to a piece of music.
